Safe, Hygienic Foot Care in Your Home
When receiving foot care treatment, it is important to know that every appropriate precaution has been taken to protect your health and wellbeing.
Heeling Your Soles follows strict infection-control procedures for every appointment. All reusable instruments are thoroughly cleaned, professionally sterilised and kept sealed until they are required for your treatment.
Charlie’s experience working for more than 20 years in hospital operating theatres has provided him with a strong understanding of clinical hygiene, patient safety and the importance of preventing cross-contamination.

Why Is Instrument Sterilisation Important?
Foot care instruments come into close contact with the nails and skin. In some circumstances, they may also come into contact with small breaks in the skin or potentially infectious material.
Without appropriate cleaning and sterilisation, microorganisms could potentially be transferred between surfaces, instruments and patients.
Effective infection control helps protect against:
- Bacteria
- Viruses
- Fungal spores
- Cross-contamination
- Avoidable skin and nail infections
Cleaning alone removes visible contamination, but it does not necessarily destroy all microorganisms. This is why reusable instruments must pass through a carefully managed, multi-stage process.
How Are Foot Care Instruments Sterilised?
Reusable instruments undergo several stages before they are used again.
1. Initial Cleaning
After use, instruments are soaked and carefully scrubbed in an appropriate enzymatic cleaning solution.
This helps loosen and remove visible debris from the surface of the instruments, including material that may have collected around joints, edges or textured areas.
2. Ultrasonic Cleaning
The instruments are then placed into an ultrasonic cleaner.
The ultrasonic process produces very small vibrations within the cleaning fluid, helping dislodge debris from areas that may be difficult to reach through manual cleaning alone.
This provides a more comprehensive clean before sterilisation takes place.
3. Drying and Inspection
Once cleaning has been completed, the instruments are thoroughly dried and visually inspected.
Any remaining contamination could interfere with the sterilisation process, so instruments must be clean and dry before being prepared for the next stage.
4. Sealing in Sterilisation Pouches
Each instrument set is placed into a purpose-designed sterilisation pouch and sealed.
The pouch allows the instruments to be sterilised while helping protect them from contamination afterwards.
5. Autoclave Sterilisation
The sealed instruments are placed inside an autoclave.
An autoclave uses a carefully controlled combination of high-pressure steam, moisture and high temperature to destroy microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and resilient fungal spores.
This is a much more thorough process than simply wiping instruments with disinfectant or soaking them in a cleaning solution.
6. Sealed Until Your Appointment
Following sterilisation, the instruments remain enclosed inside their pouches.
The pouch is only opened when the instruments are required for your treatment, helping prevent them from becoming contaminated between sterilisation and use.
What Is an Autoclave?
An autoclave is specialist equipment used to sterilise reusable instruments.
It works by exposing the instruments to pressurised steam at a controlled temperature for a specified period. The steam penetrates the instrument surfaces and destroys microorganisms that may survive ordinary washing or disinfection.
Autoclaves are widely used in healthcare environments where reliable instrument sterilisation is essential.
Preventing Cross-Contamination During Home Visits
Infection control involves more than sterilising instruments.
Care is also taken to maintain a clean working environment and to avoid contamination during treatment. Appropriate precautions may include:
- Hand hygiene before and after treatment
- Use of suitable personal protective equipment
- Preparation of a clean treatment area
- Safe handling of sterilised instruments
- Appropriate use and disposal of single-use items
- Safe collection and storage of used instruments
- Cleaning of reusable equipment between appointments
- Correct disposal of clinical or contaminated waste where applicable
These procedures help ensure that the same professional standards are maintained when treatment is provided in your home.
Are Instruments Shared Between Patients?
Reusable instruments may be used during different appointments, but only after they have completed the full cleaning and sterilisation process.
Sterilised instruments remain securely pouched until they are needed. A freshly sterilised set is opened for each treatment.
Single-use products are disposed of appropriately after use and are not reused.
